With talks of a potential King of the Hill revival in the works, consider this feature from January a list of reasons why the show should be rebooted. King of the Hill is the most down-to earth animated program ever broadcast. Its story is simple, and its struggles are relatable. The Hill family Hank, Peggy, Bobby, and Luanne and their quirky neighbors in Arlen, Texas, experience the micro-tragedies and triumphs that befall all middle-class households. But what might look like a study on tedium at first glance soon unfurls into a rich world of long-winding arcs, dynamic relationships swelling with deep reservoirs of emotion, and comedic takes on the mundane. From the US Presidential race to cemetery plots, from self-defense and pocket sand to puberty and propane accessory sales, the show managed to wring humor and heart from the most trivial details of modern life.

With so many new series popping up on streaming services and DVD every day, it gets harder and harder to keep up with new shows, much less the all-time classics. In an episode that sees long-running, revolutionary animated series— South Park , Family Guy , and The Simpsons— pitted against each other in high-concept, ultra-cartoony fashion, King Of The Hill is the unobtrusive outsider, disinterested in participating in or commenting on the current trends in animated comedy. Granted, over the course of 13 seasons and plus episodes, the show saw its fair share of silly conceits and contrived setups—and got fairly repetitive in the final seasons—but the best, most memorable episodes were those that explored the conflicts and bonds that defined the Hill family and their neighbors on Rainey Street in the suburban oasis of Arlen, Texas. Hank Hill Mike Judge is a perfectly conceived central character, a staunch traditionalist whose deep humanity and pragmatic wisdom keeps him from being a conservative caricature. His war-hero father, Cotton Toby Huss , does this as well, from a decidedly different angle. His niece-by-marriage Luanne, brilliantly voiced by the late Brittany Murphy, is a flibbertigibbet who makes Hank deeply uncomfortable while simultaneously tapping into his repressed fatherly affection.

It centers on the Hills , a middle-class American family in the fictional city of Arlen, Texas. Patriarch and main character Hank Hill, who works as assistant manager at Strickland Propane, is the everyman and general protagonist of the series. His modest conservative views and biases often clash with that of his wife, Peggy; his son, Bobby; his father, Cotton; his niece, Luanne; his boss, Buck Strickland; and his neighbor, Kahn. Hank is friends with other residents on his block, especially Bill Dauterive, Dale Gribble, and Jeff Boomhauer, all of whom he has known since elementary school. It attempts to maintain a realistic approach, seeking humor in the conventional and mundane aspects of everyday life.

This resulted in some hilarious and yet down-to-Earth storylines. While some of them worked beautifully, others just ended up wasting the show's goodwill.
