This article is about the live-action film. For the animated film, see Alice in Wonderland. It is a live-action reimagining of the original animated film from and the extension of the Lewis Carroll novels Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. The film uses a technique of combining live action and CGI animation. In the film, Alice is now 19 years old and accidentally returns to Underland, a place she previously visited 13 years ago. She is told that she is the only one that can slay the Jabberwocky , a dragon controlled by the Red Queen. Burton said the original Wonderland story was always about a girl wandering around from one character to another and she never felt a connection emotionally, so he wanted to make it feel more like a story than a series of events.

It's also fairly mild, as X movies go; it could almost be an R, and it's sexy rather than offensive. Maybe because I went with low expectations, I found the movie a pleasant surprise. And its most pleasant surprise is its star, Kristine De Bell , who projects such a freshness and naivete that she charms us even in scenes where some rather alarming things are going on. I think she has a future in the movies, and not just X movies, either; there's an openness to her expression, a directness to her acting, that's genuinely appealing. We meet her first as a librarian, virginal and shy, turning down a date with the mechanic she's in love with because she's afraid he'll go too far.
The film was favorably reviewed by film critic Roger Ebert in The film initially received an X rating in and subsequently, an R rating a year later after three minutes were cut from the film. Far be it from me to equate box office success with quality, but a movie does not gross one billion dollars worldwide on the backs of hatred or even indifference. In other words: Sorry, guys; someone likes those Transformers movies. Its success has been chalked up entirely to the fact that it was a big 3D movie coming out on the heels of Avatar , discounting almost entirely the possibility that it succeeded because some of its audience wanted to see it, saw it, and liked it. Film critics were also largely uncharmed; though only about half gave the film a thumbs-down, many of the pans were particularly negative, especially in the film-geek blogosphere. Drew McWeeny called it a catastrophe and a career dead-end for Burton.

Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland Disney represents the confluence of a number of depressing cinematic trends: the need to ransack classic children's literature for ideas, the unimaginative layering of 3-D technology onto a visual universe that would look just fine without it, and the belief that slathering familiar storylines with a superficial gloss of Gothic "darkness" constitutes a substantial reinterpretation. Lewis Carroll's eminently sensible British schoolchild has been taken on a shopping spree at Hot Topic an experience that viewers are invited to share by donning the line of tie-in merchandise available for purchase at that teen-Goth chain , and the resulting makeover doesn't do her any favors. I guess it's too much to have hoped that Burton would do justice to the language of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass , to Carroll's intricate logic puzzles and plays on the literal and figurative meaning of words. A film adaptation should, of course, treat its source material as inspiration rather than dogma. But did Burton have to get the books so entirely wrong? An Alice filtered through the lens of young-adult fantasy fiction, complete with villains in eye patches, post-traumatic stress flashbacks, and CGI dragons in need of Joseph Campbell-style slaying, ceases to be Alice at all.
