electron energy and light answers

Answer Key. 41ext. Electron Energy and Light. How does light reveal the behavior of electrons in an atom? Why? From fireworks to stars, the color of light is.

Archery as a sport or a means of defense has existed for centuries. At rest, there is no tension on the bowstring and no force on the arrow. When the string and arrow are pulled back, we now have a situation where kinetic energy pulling of the string has been converted to potential energy the tension on the string. The archer releases the arrow and the potential energy is translated into kinetic energy as the arrow moves. It turns out that electrons behave the same way when energy is put into the system or released from the system. The electrons in an atom tend to be arranged in such a way that the energy of the atom is as low as possible.

You have learnt previously about the structure of an atom. The electrons surrounding the atomic nucleus are arranged in a series of levels of increasing energy. Each element has a unique number of electrons in a unique configuration therefore each element has its own distinct set of energy levels. This arrangement of energy levels serves as the atom's unique fingerprint. In the early s, scientists found that a liquid or solid heated to high temperatures would give off a broad range of colours of light. However, a gas heated to similar temperatures would emit light only at certain specific wavelengths colours.

When an electron is hit by a photon of light, it absorbs the quanta of energy the photon was carrying and moves to a higher energy state. One way of thinking about this higher energy state is to imagine that the electron is now moving faster, it has just been "hit" by a rapidly moving photon. But if the velocity of the electron is now greater, it's wavelength must also have changed, so it can no long stay in the original orbital where the original wavelength was perfect for that orbital-shape. So the electron moves to a different orbital where once again its own wavelength is in phase with its self. Electrons therefore have to jump around within the atom as they either gain or lose energy. This property of electrons, and the energy they absorb or give off, can be put to an every day use. These are tiny bubbles of epoxy or plastic with two wire connectors.

Electron Energy and Light How does light reveal the behavior of electrons in an atom? From fireworks to stars, the color of light is useful in finding out what s in matter. The emission of light by hydrogen and other atoms has played a key role in understanding the electronic structure of atoms. Trace materials, such as evidence from a crime scene, lead in paint or mercury in drinking water, can be identified by heating or burning the materials and examining the color s of light given off in the form of bright-line spectra. What happens to white light when it passes through a prism?

  1. Under the right circumstances light can be used to push electrons, freeing them from the surface of a solid.
