Just recently, the video game developer Epic Games brought some alterations to the wildly popular multiplayer sandbox survival title Fortnite , as the studio buffed building materials and nerfed SMGs in order to bring a better balance into the shooter's meta. Now, it appears as if Epic is also set to introduce more tweaks to the game by making a major change to how mouse and keyboard matchmaking operates. Apparently, even though mouse and keyboard controls are not officially supported on either PS4 or Xbox One, some third-party peripheral manufacturers' mouse and keyboard kits for consoles have gained popularity among many of Fortnite 's fans. Unfortunately, however, the latest update has broken them. With this being the case, Epic has said that it will need to make a matchmaking change to fix the issue, as it will let players get paired against others based on the peripherals that are being used. While this tweak to the matchmaking algorithm will likely be welcomed with open arms by the majority of Fortnite fans — as it will make for a more balanced experience overall — Epic didn't provide a time frame as to when this fix will be implemented in the game. At any rate, at least players will have Season 5 Week 5's Battle Pass Challenges to keep them busy until more information drops next week.
Console games are meant to be played with controllers, and mobile games are meant to be played with touchscreen controls. However, some players are instead using a keyboard and mouse as their input method, which many believe give them unfair advantages. For example, aiming is much easier for keyboard and mouse users compared to controller users. With the Xbox One currently not supporting keyboard and mouse controls, the change will only affect PlayStation 4 owners. The logic will extend to the whole party, so even if only one player in the PlayStation 4 group is using a keyboard and mouse, everyone will be going up against PC players.
Fortnite developer Epic Games plans to implement new matchmaking rules soon that will ensure those playing with keyboard and mouse are only matched with others using the same configuration. Sony doesn't allow cross-platform play with Xbox and Switch. PS4 is currently the only console out of the three Switch and Xbox One being the other two which has official support for keyboard and mouse. Microsoft is reportedly planning to bring said support to Xbox One in the near future, and a leaked presentation revealed that Microsoft would give developers the tools to detect whether a keyboard or mouse is connected and then restrict such users accordingly. Microsoft is also working on a new API that will allow game developers to detect and block accessories that mimic controller inputs. That would help developers such as Epic Games weed out players who try to disguise keyboard and mouse as controllers in Fortnite. With the Fortnite v8. Epic combined the Xbox and PS4 pools to make cross-platform a requirement to play the game on console. They also moved Switch and Mobile to the same pool, even if the Switch player is using a controller. These changes are obviously a bit complicated as they are a solid change from how Fortnite matchmaking operated for the previous seven seasons. Luckily, FairyTrainerLaura made a nice flowchart that encompasses these changes and answers a couple frequently asked questions from players confused about the changes. As you can see from the graphic, the only platform that will fill you with keyboard and mouse players if you are using a controller is PC. The lowest bucket is the most questionable one.
Epic Games has made some drastic changes to "Fortnite Battle Royale " in terms of input methods and keybind configuration. When the video game was just released, PC players could change their keybinds for every single button on their keyboard and mouse. On the other side, console players were stuck with a few button configuration schemes which they could not modify. A few months later, controller players were given a full customization control for their keybinds, which was a huge step in the right direction. Thanks to this change, there are some controller players who outbuild players with keyboard and mouse. Furthermore, recent tests in " Fortnite Battle Royale" have revealed another huge advantage for controllers, and surprisingly, it is not the aim assist.
