This abstract from Dr. In order to dialogue amongst themselves, Christian groups of different persuasions must understand their respective missionary self-images. With this as a priori I here attempt to analyze the origins and basic theology which motivated Seventh-Day Adventists for the last hundred years making it one of the most widespread Protestant churches today. This historical, theological and missiological approach will concentrate on the Seventh-Day Adventist use of Scripture which is imperative in comprehending their missionary efforts. The political, social and religious context in the United States during the early 1 9th century was conducive to the development of new religious movements. American Protestantism provided the immediate religious context for the origins of the Seventh-Day Adventist theology of mission. Gerard Damsteegt to your wish list. This description of the origins and basic theology of the Seventh-day Adventist church shows how the church has become one of the most widespread Protestant denominations. Damsteegt's analysis of the Scriptural basis of the church helps to explain its missionary nature. This is an excellent book on the history of the Adventist church. This is a very scholarly book with footnotes etc. If you are serious about learning about the history of the Adventist church , I recommend this book. Damsteegt is a church historian.

With the increasing network of communications, in many parts of the world action between members of the human race has intensified. These inter-human relations have led to a desire and search for mutual understanding through dialogue. Such communication has taken place among Christians as well as between Christians and persons of other religions. To discover the depth of faith of those who have different religious convictions, an openness of spirit and a thorough knowledge of their religious self-image is indispensable. FSDA xiii.
